He was the 3rd child, following his brother Gerald and sister Morene. His mother died when Dick was around 3 years old and so he was raised by his paternal grandparents. Dick was raised in Idaho Falls, Id. When he was 16 years old he was involved in a bicycle/Auto collison and lost his left leg.
After working odd jobs around Idaho Falls, he moved to Portland, OR and worked at the Kaiser shipyards of Vancouver, WA building liberty ships. The pretty girl in the newpaper office caught his eye and the pursute began....Sibyl Howell of Ione OR, became his bride in June of 1946. Their union produced two children, Janice Kay and Richard Lee.
Dick & Sibyl purchased what would become City Radiator and Wheel in 1950, which they successfully ran together, making countless friends and colleagues thru the years until retirement in 1988. They built the cabin on Sunflower Flat Rd out of Heppner, OR which has been his home until his death.
Dick loved to hunt, fish, rock hound, and mine for gold, once spending a solid month trying to hit the mother lode in Alaska. He also tried his hand in Arizona.
During the long winters in "the mountains", Dick used some of his time and talent painting beautiful paint by number pictures
which he lovingly gave to his family members. In his later years the medication he took caused his hands to shake, but that didn't stop Dick....he figured out how to steady his hand and still produced blue ribbon pieces.
After 66 years of marriage to his Sibyl, he spent the last two carrying on, loving his mountain home and continuing to do the things he could. He was always on his 4 wheel Honda, checking out the grounds and until recently was still mowing the acreage.
