Obituary from The Salt Lake Tribune, 11/18/1995, pg. B2:

Frances Grant Bennett, Widow, Mother of Utah Senators, Dies

Frances Grant Bennett, the widow of one former United States senator and mother of another, died Friday in Salt Lake City of natural causes. She was 96.

An accomplished musician and writer, Frances Bennett was active in Washington circles during the 24 years her late husband, Sen. Wallace F. Bennett, served in Congress. Her son, Robert F. Bennett, was elected to the Senate in 1992.

Frances Bennett was a former member of the Mormon Church's Primary General Board, where she chaired the fund-raising committee for the original Primary Children's Hospital. A pianist, she arranged music for several Mormon children's hymns.

In Washington, Frances Bennett joined in many volunteer activities, including the Red Cross. She also was president of the Congressional Club, which consisted of the wives of senators, representatives, Supreme Court justices and presidential cabinet members. During that time, she oversaw the publication of the Congressional Club Cookbook.

In 1968, Deseret Book published her account of her life experiences, Glimpses of a Mormon Family.

Frances Bennett was born in Salt Lake City on Sept. 23, 1899, the youngest child of Heber J. Grant and Emily Wells Grant. Her mother died in 1907.

In November 1918, Heber J. Grant became seventh president of the LDS Church.

Frances Bennett attended Salt Lake City schools, where she met her future husband. She graduated from the University of Utah, but also attended Radcliffe College in Boston.

The Bennetts were married on Sept. 6, 1922, in the Salt Lake Temple. Wallace Bennett was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1950, served four terms and left in 1974. He died in December 1993.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
