Edward was named Johann Eduard Birnstiel, a twin and son to Johann Georg Birnstiel and Anna Dorothea Reb. Born in Schierschnitz, Saxe-Meiningen (now Thuringia), Germany, the village is now Neuhaus-Schierschnitz, Thuringia, Germany.

Edward was to leave on the Ship Margaretha & Maria with his family in 1852, but his paternal grandmother died shortly before leaving. The family delayed their departure until 1853 and sailed on board the Ship Elsfleth to New York City.

Edward was a mining engineer, served in the Civil War as a Private in B Co., 129th Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry.

The cause of death is unknown, but his father died three days after him. Edward was buried in Brock Cemetery in Ashland, Schuylkill, Pennsylvania, USA.
