Kim was born in Lincoln, IL May 7, 1950, to Dave and Jeanne Shroyer. The family (Dave, Jeanne, Kim, and older brothers Kerry and Jayme) eventually ended up in Broomfield, CO, after living in Park Forest, IL, where Dave was a pilot for United Airlines. Kim graduated from Broomfield High School in 1968, then attended Columbia College in MO, with studies abroad in England and France. Kim greatly enjoyed the perks of having a pilot father, as the family was able to travel extensively around the world. She became an expert traveler, and naturally funneled this interest and expertise into a career as a flight attendant with United Airlines, based in Chicago. She bragged that she was with the last class of attendants that wore uniforms that included hats and gloves. Wanting to get back to Colorado, and unable to transfer, Kim decided to leave United and moved back to Broomfield, then to Boulder. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Dave Allen, a police officer with Boulder PD. One of Dave's cop buddies introduced them, as he was wanting to date Kim's roommate, and while they never made it, Kim and Dave certainly did. They married on August 11, 1973, and after a honeymoon in Maui, settled in Boulder, making it their home for their 43 years together. After meeting Dave, Kim's career passions changed to Law Enforcement, and she joined the Boulder County Sheriff's Office in May 1973. She started out in the records department and as a jail matron, eventually becoming a dispatcher and a commissioned officer, attaining the rank of sergeant in communications. Being commissioned required Kim to qualify in firearms proficiency, and she was proud of the talent she showed as well as her high scores. As a dispatcher and supervisor, Kim's reputation among police officers was stellar - "old timers" to this day say she was "the best" and express appreciation for the way she took care of them, especially in high stress situations. Kim retired from the Sheriff's Office in August, 1986. Tired of graveyard shifts, she decided to try her hand at something very different - oncology clinical trials, where she became a manager of records. Over the years, she worked for Amgen, Gillead Science, Novella, and O.S.I., enjoying her work and excelling at her job. In 2012, Kim left her job, and, along with her brother Jayme, began caring for her ailing parents, which she did until she was unable to, due to illness. According to Dave, Kim was a wonderful wife, friend, companion, and playmate. Their marriage endured shift work, wearing pagers, and passing notes to communicate between shifts. They decided not to have children together, but received immense joy from a succession of terrific canine companions (and one cat). Kim's devotion to the dogs is legendary, with social schedules and vacations dependent on dog care. Kim became a huge Bronco fan (partially a hostage situation, because Dave is such a Bronco Nut!) They have been season ticket holders for 41 years. Kimberlee Jeanne Allen died August 18, 2016 in Boulder, CO after a short hospice stay. Kim will be greatly missed by her husband, her dogs Taylor and Hunter, her family, and many, many close friends. She is survived by her husband, Dave Allen, her father, Dave Shroyer, and brother, Jayme Shroyer, both of Longmont, and brother, Kerry Shroyer, of CapeTown, South Africa, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Her mother, Jeanne Shroyer, preceeded her in death. A memorial ceremony for Kim will be held Thursday, September 1 at 10:00 am at Darrell Howe Mortuary, 1701 W South Boulder Road, Lafayette, CO, 80026. Following the ceremony, inurnment will take place at Green Mountain Cemetery, 290 20th Street, Boulder, CO. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Wildlife Sanctuary in Keenesburg, CO, or the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, are greatly appreciated.
