Roy Robert Abell Jr. was born 21 September 1918 in Mineral Wells, Texas to Roy Abell Sr and Nena née Scott Abell.

He married Miss Billy Mary Gleaton on 14 June 1939 in Lubbock Texas.

Roy moved with his parents and brother to Lorenzo Texas in 1921, and two more brothers were born while the family resided in Lorenzo.
His father was operating a service station in Lorenzo when a car salesman persuaded him to order one vehicle for $50 down. When that car was received and sold, another was ordered. This was the founding of Abell Chevrolet Company.

In 1936, the family moved again, this time to Ralls in Crosby County, Texas where the dealership was owned by Roy Abell Sr. until Roy Jr. purchased the business in 1955. He operated the business until his son Danny bought it in 1981.

He served as chairman of the pastor-parish committee and the administrative board of First United Methodist Church in Ralls, and was active in civic affairs, being a member of the Ralls Chamber of Commerce, the housing board and a former school trustee. He was a Rotarian and a Mason.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Danny Abell and Davey Abell, both of Ralls; two brothers, Earl C. Abell and Lyman Abell, both of Ralls; and four grandchildren. Brother, Billy Wayne Abell, preceded him in death.

Memorial rites were conducted August 3rd at the First United Methodist Church in Ralls. The Reverend David Ray officiated.
