Son of Wilson & Nancy (Keller) Chesser. Married Mahala Elizabeth Sherrill on 10 DEC 1857 in Newton (Catwba County), NC. During the War Between the States, he served as a private in Company H of the 52nd North Carolina Infantry CSA. He was present at the Battle of Gettysburg and was captured at the Battle of Petersburg. He spent the rest of the war at Point Lookout POW Camp in Maryland. After the war, he migrated with his family to Hawkins County, TN and began a new life. He became casualty to the raging 1899 Influenza or Yellow Fever epidemics of Hawkins County, TN just a few months follwing the death of his youngest son who died as a result of the same epidemic. His original gravestone was replaced circa 1930 by Hugh & Violet (Chesser) Perkey and the replacement gravestone was inscribed with the incorrect exact days of birth and death as well as the incorrect year of death as proven by his obituary and the Family Bible of his son, Leander Blonsful Chesser.

HOPEWELL PRIMATIVE BAPTIST CHURCH OBITUARY, 29 AUG 1899: "E.A. CHESSER - Was born June the 10th, 1833, and died on August 29th, 1899. He professed faith in Christ at the ford of Coward's Creek, in 1887 while they were attending to the ordinance of baptism. He had spent much of his life living of the flesh and as the apostle Paul did, he could tell the time and circumstances of his conviction and conversion. He was received into the fellowship of the Hopewell Church, and remained there till death."
