Donald N. Maxim, 33

Donald Nick Maxim, a 33-year-old machine operator for Gulf Steel Corporation, was killed yesterday morning when an 18-ton load of steel toppled over on him.

Pinellas County Sheriff's Department deputies said Maxim and another man, Joseph Bert, were unloading steel angles from a railroad car about 9:50 a.m. at Gulf Steel, 4156 Park St. N, when a four-foot high stack toppled.

Bert jumped free but Maxim was caught beneath the load. Bert, of 7353 Orpine Drive, was not injured.

Maxim, of 300 Bay Plaza, Treasure Island, was born in Chicago and came here two years ago from Long Lake, Ill.

A Methodist, he is survived by his wife, Agnes L. of Treasure Island; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steven Maxim of Long Lake; four children, Steven, Joyce, Vickie and Carol; two brothers, James of Seminole and John of Long Beach, Calif.; a sister, Kathy Coon in Illinois.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Beach Memorial Chapel. The Rev. N. E. Durrance will officiate.
