George was the son of the cordwainer John Pointon and Hannah (maybe Hannah Ferns?). He married Mary Ann Johnson in 1844. He was a coal miner who emigrated to Illinois. He worked in the Old Gavois Coal Mines in St Louis until he bought property in Belleville and operated a coal mine there. He had 11 children.
