On February 10, 1953, Ben was united in marriage to Dorothy Alice Schwab. This marriage was blessed with five children, Jane, Dana, Steven, Sandra and James.
After marriage, Ben worked beside his brother Richard to operate the family farm – which included grain, pork and beef production. Ben and Richard were progressive farmers who were successful in implementing new and innovative farming methods. In 1987 Ben’s health forced him into retirement. Ben and Dorothy later moved into Windom. For the past year, Ben had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom. On Wednesday, October 22, 2014, Ben passed on peacefully there at the age of 90 years with his family at his side.
Ben lived a faith-filled life which was reflected in all he did. He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom. He was also a member of the Windom Service Club. Ben shared his love of music by learning to play a keyboard and entertaining at area nursing homes and senior centers for 15 years. Ben had many other enjoyments in life including extensive travel, golfing, dancing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Ben is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Dorothy Becker of Windom; five children, Jane Becker of Chanhassen, Dana (Gary) Hogan of Fulda, Steven (Rhonda) Becker of Heron Lake, Sandra Heger of Windom, and James (Sonya) Becker of Dundee; nine grandchildren; Jessica Hogan, Amanda (Duncan) Bowring, Adam (Darcy) Becker, Angela (Scott) Swenson, Ensign Jared Heger – US Navy, Ethan, Eli, Marissa and Jonah Becker; one sister; Margaret Finnegan of Heron Lake; one sister-in-law; Helen Becker (wife of Richard) of Heron Lake; and several nieces and nephews.
Ben is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leon, Joseph and Richard; and two sisters, Mary Lou McGown and Delores Seydel.
