Father John Alexander, S.J., who served at two New York City secondary schools, died March 12 at Murray-Weigel Hall, Bronx. He was 90.
He taught at Brooklyn Prep 1949-1951. In 1956, he returned and served there as teacher, administrator and, in time, headmaster, until the school closed in 1972. Father Alexander then taught theology at Xavier High School, Manhattan, for five years.
Starting in 1978, he worked full time with the Brooklyn Prep Alumni Association. He was a leader in the efforts of its Alumni Association Fund, which raises money for scholarships at Jesuit high schools in New York City.
Born in Jersey City, N.J., he entered the Society of Jesus in 1941 at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie. He was ordained in 1954 at Fordham University Church.
He studied philosophy at West Baden College, and received a bachelor’s degree in sacred theology from Woodstock College, Md.
He lived at Fordham University’s Loyola Hall starting in 2008, eventually moving to the Jesuit infirmary at Murray-Weigel Hall. A Funeral Mass was offered March 15 at Fordham University Church. Burial was at the Jesuit cemetery in Auriesville.

He pronounced his first vows there on Aug. 15, 1943. In preparation for priesthood, he studied theology at Woodstock College, Md., from 1951-55, obtaining the Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree in June 1955. He was ordained a priest on June 19, 1954, at the Fordham University Church by Francis Cardinal Spellman.
In 2008 he began living at Loyola Hall, the Jesuit community on the Fordham University campus, and for the last years of his life he resided at the Jesuit infirmary, Murray-Weigel Hall. He is survived by his nieces Mrs. Robert (Patricia) Donnelly of Avon, N.J., and Mrs. John (Judy) Matthews of South Orange, N.J.
