GREGORY HERMAN PERINO
Feb. 25, 1914 ~ July 4, 2004

Gregory Herman Perino, 91, of Idabel, passed away Monday, July 4, 2005 at Owasso. He was born in St. Helena, N.C. on February 25, 1914, the son of Henry and Virginia Perino.

The family moved to Belleville, Ill. while he was still a child. He attended public school in Belleville and graduated from Belleville Township High School in 1934. He married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Green on April 3, 1937. They had four children and were married for 66 years until her death in 2003.

Gregory worked at Scott Field near Belleville during and shortly after World War II. He and his brother Louie opened Perinos' Cabinet Shop in Belleville in the late 1940s. Since age 12 Gregory had been an avid amateur archaeologist and was a member of several archaeological associations in Illinois and Missouri. in 1956 he was offered the opportunity to become a professional archaeologist and he jumped at the chance. He became the archaeologist for the Thomas Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa. He retired from the Gilcrease Museum in 1972 but soon took a job teaching an archaeological field school in Illinois. In 1975 he became the archaeologist for The Museum of The Red River in Idabel. After retiring from there, he became an archaeological consultant and continued this work until April of this year.

Gregory has written many books on archaeology and had numerous articles and monographs on the subject published. He has received many awards over the years for his work and dedication.

Gregory was a soft spoken man with a quick wit and a dry sense of humor. He also had a passion for gardening and had a large vegetable garden in his backyard every year.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents, Henry and Virginia; and his grandson, John David Perino.

Gregory is survived by his brother, Louie and sister, Sylvia Clement, both of Belleville, Ill.; four children, Charles and wife Janice of Springfield, Ill., Robert and wife Linda of Owasso, Sandra Rodgers and husband Gene of N. Richland Hill, Texas, and Sue Ann Cole of Idabel; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10:oo a.m. on Thursday, July 7, 2005 at the Conley-White Funeral Chapel in Idabel.
