Richard was born to John and Jane Babington. Jane's maiden name is likely Clarke. She died on the same day that she gave birth to her only child, Richard. Jane was John Babington's second wife, his first wife Eliza Roebuck died in 1822. After Jane's death, John was married a third time to Jane G. Couper. Richard had eight half siblings by his father's other marriages, including half brother, Gen. John Henry Melville Babington.

At the age of 30, Richard married Matilda Elizabeth Maxwell Train on Jan. 7, 1858 in Holy Trinity, Paddington, Middlesex, England. They had four children.

1. George John Babington, b. 1858 in Burma; d. 1939 in Rapid City, South Dakota; m. Lillie Ann Morgan in 1884. They had five children; Melville, Winifred, Morgan, William and Willard.

2. Jane Ranking Babington, b. Jul. 22, 1861 in India; m. Rev. Walter Guy Needham. No other information known to me.

3. Charles William Babington, b. 1861 in Calcutta; d. 1940 in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania; m. Isabella McDonald Fraser in 1902. They had one child, Margaret Maxwell Babington.

4. David Melville Babington, b. 1864 in India; d. 1929 in Switzerland; m. Violet Mary Greenstreet in about 1898. They had two children, Doris and Joan.

The probate record of Richard shows him to be a Major General in the English Army.

He died at the age of 59, in 1885. Richard's last home was in Meadow Bank, Dumfries-shire.

The cemetery record listed his burial date as Sep 4, 1885 in the Dumfries High Cemetery.
