Army Sgt. Gibbs was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Giessen, Germany as a mortar gunner.

Gibbs was manning a machine gun on the roof of an outpost in Ramadi. About 11:00 PM, he courageously stood up from his rooftop observation post to engage the enemy and was shot once. He died before medics could get him to the nearest Army base.

Nick had a family history of patriotism and love of country through stories and histories told to him by his grandfather.

After graduating in 2000 from Northwest Guilford High School he went to work for Timco Aviation Services but then decided to join the Army in 2003 as a way to do something for his country.

Among his mortar platoon buddies in Iraq, he had a lot of nicknames: Little Nick, Baby Gibbs, Li'l Ray, Giblet and for every nickname, there was a story to go along with it. In January his unit, known as the "Bandits" deployed to Iraq.

Nick was an avid Duke basketball fan and enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a very caring and compassionate person who leaves behind many friends. He told his mother not to cry when he left because when he came home at the end of October he would be coming home for good; but then his tour was extended until the end of February.

He is survived by his father Michael Lynn Gibbs born 14 Oct 1955 in Guilford, NC; Grandfather Carmel Winchester Gibbs (1910-1985), Grandmother Bonzoe Elizabeth Ritch Gibbs (1912-1984) married 24 May 1937 in Charlotte, Mecklenburg,NC, 2nd Grandmother Iva Mae Fox Gibbs ; and mother Debbie Collins.
