Easton Express Obituary 10.21.1901, page 5:

Henry M. Mutchler, the oldest member of the Northampton County bar, died at the hospital at Hampton, Va., on Saturday last of general debility. Mr. Mutchler was born at Chain Dam on November 21, 1819. He was admitted to practice at the bar in August 1848 and was the first District Attorney elected in the county, having been chosen to fill that office in 1850. Previous to that time the office was an appointive one and the occupant was known as Deputy Attorney. Mr. Mutchler practiced continuously from the time of his admission to the bar until his death.

Mr. Mutchler was a Civil War veteran, having served in Company E, One Hundred and Fifty-third Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers as an assistant in the quartermaster's department.

Deceased is survived by two daughters, Mr. A.A. Hammann and Mrs. Ella Nightingale.

The funeral of Henry Mellick Mutchler was held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the residence of Albert Hammann, son-in-law of the deceased man, 1136 Northampton street. Rev. E. M. Grahn, of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, conducted the services. Six nephews of the dead lawyer officiated as pall bearers. They were Howard Mutchler, W. Arthur Mutchler, Jacob H. Mutchler, Asher Mutchler, James Mutchler and Oscar J. Mutchler. The remains were privately interred in the Easton Cemetery.

Information about the Mutchler Family in Pennsylvania and New Jersey found at the Newberry Library in Chicago. In a biographical sketch of a William Mutchler of Easton, PA there was the following information.

Three brothers name Mutchler, including one named Valentine, arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Duke of Bedford on September 14, 1751. They were from near Hamburg, Germany. This first Valentine had a son named Valentine who married Catherine Steinbach. They had a son named John (1792 - 1838) who married Margaret Melick. John was described as a farmer of the old school - frugal, industrious, and conservative. John and Margaret had at least two children. Henry Melick Mutchler and William Mutchler.

William was born at Chain Dam, PA, a community on the Lehigh River on Dec. 31, 1831. John died when William was seven. William worked on the farm, but went to Easton to study law with his eldest brother, Henry Melick; and later William practiced law at Easton (1852 - 93). He was the prothonotary of Northanpton County, PA (1860 - 66), assessor of internal revenue (1867 - 69) and chairman of the Democratic State Committee (1867 - 69). Delegate to Democratic National Conventions (1876 - 93), and the representative of Northamtopn County (8th District), in the 44th, 47th, 48th, 51st, and 52nd Congresses. He was elected to the 53rd Congress, but died before he could take his seat. He died in Easton on June 23, 1893. William had a son named Howard who was the proprietor and editor of the Easton Daily Express and the Northampton Democrat. He was elected to Congress in 1901.
