Jacob Schneider was born in Germany, the son of Michael Schneider and Catherine Sanser.

Michael and Catherine Schneider and their sons Jacob age 26, Englebert age 24, Mathias age 22, Peter age 9, boarded the Sea Eagle a 625 ton barque out of Kennebunkport, Maine under the command of Captain A. N. Williams. The ship departed Antwerp, Belgium and arrived in New York City, USA on June 14, 1854.

Jacob and Gertrude Pauley were married about 1857. Together they reared eleven children on their farm in St. Clair Twp: Mathias, Englebert, Anna Sophia, Susan, Joseph, Francis, John, Michael Timothy, Anna Gertrude, Jacob and Leonard.
