Beriah Rice and his third wife, Catherine Ann Muckford are Robert's parents, Robert married Sarah Maria Ingraham on 17 Mar 1830 and were married 62 years.

His obituary said in part: The death of Robert M. Rice occurred at his home, Little Bras d'Or, Cape Breton, Feb. 15, age 87, and his wife,Sarah Rice, who died the following day, age 84. They were married 62 years. Bro. Rice was born in Baddeck where at the time of his death, his father was the only Baptist in the place. Sister Rice was born at Margaree, being the daughter of James Ingraham and Ann Muckford. Bro. & Sister Rice were active in nomatter which Baptist church they were affiliated with and was also active in his life time in addition to farming he operated a grist mill, a shingle mill anda saw mill. He was a son of U.E. Loyalists. The Rices first settled in Digby,NS. where the Rice family still live. Brier Island was called after Beriah Rice, who at the time owned the island.

Robert and Catherine had a family of 12 children and ten survive. The aged husband and wife were interned Sunday, 21st Feb., the caskets being placed side by side in one grave. The following day the family received word that Mr. Rice's sister,Mrs. McQuillian, age 90, widow of Rev David McQuillian had also died.
