THANKS FOR YOUR SERVICE.. Memorial service for Quilla Dee Reed, 84, of Decatur will be Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Richard Lawson, the Rev. Milton Gloor and the Rev. David Rollins officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing.
Burial will be in St. John's Episcopal Church Columbarium. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church library.
Mr. Reed, who died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at his residence, was born July 8, 1922, in Mount Hope to Jimmy D. Reed and Cora Reed. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Force and received the military's Distinguished Flying Cross for Bravery. At 21 years old, he parachuted out of his B-17 and was picked up by the Dutch resistance where he survived for nine months. He retired from Monsanto.
Mr. Reed loved sharing his experiences with school groups and many others. Over many years, he spoke to numerous school groups as well as civic groups. He loved life, his families, and all those who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Jane Reed; sons, David James Reed and John Stevens Reed; and grandson, Quilla Bibb Reed.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Elizabeth Muse Hollon Reed; son, Robert L. Reed and his wife, Joan, of Napa, Calif.; daughter, Mary Reed Nixon and her husband, Howard, of Franklin, Tenn.; stepdaughters, Elizabeth Ann Hollon Steeno and her husband, Kerry, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Jane Lee of West Palm Beach, Fla.; stepson, Frank Hollon Jr. of Athens; sister, Rachel Barkley of Boaz; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Building Fund, Westminster Presbyterian Church Library Fund or to the Decatur Free Clinic.
