She was the sister of Margaret (Spence) Verner who was traveling with her to the colonies aboard the Henry and Francis, but who died in route. They were daughters of James Spence, merchant, of Queensferry, Scotland.

In addition to children linked below, James and Christian were the parents of Agnes who married Andrew Hay, James Brown (2nd wife, 1st was also named Agnes) and Thomas Presgrove. James and Christian were the grandparents of Annebel, daughter of Agnes and husband James Brown.
