Charles Warren "Chuck" Greenfield, 77, of Wesleyan Lane in Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Oct. 30, 2003. Chuck was born March 8, 1926, in Louisville, Ky., to the late Charles A. and Katherine M. Greenfield. Upon graduating from DuPont Manual High School in 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was sent to the Philippines as a radio and radar specialist. On the way to Okinawa, the war ended and Chuck served out his World War II duties as a sergeant in the Army of Occupation in Japan until 1947. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1951 with a B.S. in electrical engineering. His career with Western Electric began as a field engineer for Airborne Bombing Systems and then the Nike Missile Project. His promotion to manager of the Undersea Surveillance Systems Group led to department chief for the Nuclear Submarine Systems Group and lastly, the engineering project manager over Command and Control Systems. Chuck retired in 1988 with 44 years of dedicated service to the defense of our country. Chuck and his wife of 54 years, Jane Milner Greenfield, recently deceased, were members of Saint John's Lutheran Church, where he served as congregational president, chairman of the Board of Elders, and as an elder. He was honored last month with the Mill Ridge Property Owners Association Appreciation Award for 19 years of leadership and dedication. Chuck is survived by his two children, Marianne Greenfield Buldo and Christopher Charles Greenfield; his sister, Helen Elizabeth Hinton; three nieces and many special friends.
