He was the oldest of four children. He attended Laverne Schools and graduated in 1956. He then attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University, majoring in Biology and was a member of the football team. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
On March 27, 1964 Cecil married Sherrill (Sherry) Edwards in the Methodist Church in Laverne. They moved and taught school in several different places in Oklahoma and Texas before returning to Laverne.
After settling in Laverne they welcomed a daughter, Kathleen (Kate) Preston Nickel. They farmed and raised sheep and Cecil was self-employed. After Kathleen graduated they traveled, living in Texas, Arizona and finally settling in Oklahoma. Cecil loved to talk and truly believed in the naturopathic way. He was always trying to sell the next "big" thing whether it was alternative medicine or unconventional farming methods.
He loved his grandkids and always had a fishing pole ready for them. He also enjoyed watching them show their animals and play sports.
Cecil was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Faith Preston, and an infant brother.
He is survived by his wife Sherry of 48 years, one daughter Kathleen Nickel and her husband Lynn, three grandchildren, Kolby, Kory and Karlee Dietz of Alva; one brother Charles (Chuck) Preston and his wife Mary of Norman, Oklahoma; one sister Patricia (Patti) Gardner and her husband Leon of Canute, Oklahoma; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
