Joy Carolyn Applegate
March 31, 1938-September 9, 2016
Joy Carolyn Applegate was born on March 31, 1938 to Theodore and Dora Brugger. Joy died at home with her family around her on September 9, 2016. She was 78.
Joy is survived by her husband Glenn, son Greg Applegate (Barb) daughter Julie Neuberger (Christopher), sister Joan Plieth and granddaughters Gwynne Stark, Stephanie Stark and Bailey Burt.
Joy was born and raised in SE Portland Oregon where she attended Cleveland High School graduating in the class of 1956. On June 27, 1958 she wed her sweetheart Glenn F. Applegate Jr. After living near Mt. Tabor, they settled into the Woodstock neighborhood. Joy worked for the Oregon Liquor Control commission until Greg was born in 1960 and was a homemaker from then on.
Joy and Glenn cherished family time and visiting with friends and extended family. Holidays and summer gatherings were held often and could be large events. Joy always enjoyed a good party or dinner with friends.
Joy and Glenn traveled extensively from the time they were young. Their travels were mostly by car around North America staying in hotels and camping in tents. Even though she couldn't swim well, Joy embraced Glenn's love of boating. They spent a lot of time at Lake Billy Chinook and then at Owyhee Reservoir after they built a cabin on the Dry Creek arm with their friends and family.
As they got older they transitioned to a camper and then to a motorhome. After Glenn retired they would be gone for months at a time exploring backcountry in their VW Bug which was towed behind the motorhome.
Joy was also committed to her faith and was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran church in SE Portland. Services will be held on September 17, 2016 with a viewing at 10 AM Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home, (11801 SE Mt Scott Blvd., Portland, OR 97086) followed by the Burial Service at 11 AM. There will be a short memorial service at St Paul Lutheran Church (3880 SE Brooklyn St Portland Or 97202) at 1 PM followed by a celebration of life with a light lunch provided at the church.
