Erastus C. Hawkins was born in South Haven, Long Island, in 1860 and passed away at New York Hospital in Manhattan in 1912 following a surgical operation while on a business trip.

He was a noted engineer who built railways in Alaska at the turn of the century, the most outstanding one being the Copper River & Northwestern Railroad from Cordova to Kennecott (1907-1911). He was also engaged in the building of the White Pass & Yukon Railroad as well as the Klondike Mines Railway.

On June 9, 1885, he had married Emma Sullivan in Arapahoe County, Colorado. She was the daughter of Charles Sullivan and Julia William Bird, of New York City.

He is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters. Burial took place at his old home at South Haven, Long Island, April 11, 1912.
