Mrs. Charles Blongey, 67, trapped by smoke and fire as neighbors fail in attempts to rescue her from home. Trapped by smoke and flames, Mrs. Charles Blongey, 67, perished in a fire which destroyed her home at Westport about 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Her husband, semi-crippled with rheumatism, escaped from the flames with five-year old Mary Ann Lott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lott, next door neighbors, and attempted unsuccessfully to return to the buring house to search for Mrs. Blongey. The woman's body was found in the ruins in an upright position on a couch in a downstair room. Its position indicated that Mrs. Blongey had been overcome or died of a heart attack before she had a chance to leave the room. Dr. L. H. Gaus of Ticonderoga, Essex county coroner, who examined the body, agreed with this theory. The fire is believed to have started from an overturned oil stove. Only a shell of the building remained standing. The Lott child was visiting Mr. and Mrs. Blongey when the fire was discovered. She was not injured, although Blongey's clothing was afire when he reached the open and he suffered burns on his legs. His injuries are not believed to be serious.
