Son of Samuel Copley and Rhoda Parmalee. Joined the Latter-day Saints in 1831. Owned 759 acres of land at Thompson, Ohio. When the New York saints moved to Ohio in 1831 he allowed them to settle on his land, but afterward rescinded his agreement. He testified against Joseph Smith at the 1834 Philastus Hurlbut trial and was later disfellowshipped. Reinstated in 1836.
