Alvin T. Akins, Sr., 79, of Blairsville, PA died on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 in the Florida Hospital, Wauchula, Florida.A son of Robert A. Akins Sr. and Oretta Stumpf Akins, he was born November 4, 1924 in Blacklick Twp., PA.Mr. Akins lived most of his life in the Blairsville area. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren, camping, building huge campfires and growing flowers.He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps.He was employed by McQuaide Trucking, Johnstown, PA for 40 years, retiring in 1988.Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Eva Mae Muir Akins to whom he married February 5, 1947; two sons, Alvin T. "Ted" Akins, Jr. and his wife, Beverly of Blairsville, PA; Gary E. Akins and his wife, Sue, of Blairsville, PA and a daughter, Linda L. Alsop and her husband, Gary of Coral, PA; four grandchildren, Keith A. Akins and his wife, Carrie; Gayle N. Akins; Lindsey J. Akins and Steven D. Akins; a sister, Anna Mae Haggerty of Harrisburg, PA and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert A. Akins.The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. at the Shoemaker Funeral Home, Inc., 49 N. Walnut St., Blairsville, PA. Services will be held on Monday at 11:00 A.M. in the funeral home with Rev. Arlene Schweitzer officiating.Interment will be in the Blairsville Cemetery, Blairsville, PA.Military services will be accorded by the Blairsville VFW Post #5821 and the American Legion.
