Notes: "Samuel Strange Basford enlisted in the Confederate Army on September 8, 1861 at St. Vincent's Island, Florida. He fought at the battles of Chickamauga and Murfreesboro. He was captured on November 25,1863 at Missionary Ridge, Tennessee and sent to Rock Island Prison in Illinois until he was exchanged and sent to Richmond on March 3, 1865 due to sickness. He reached home (Jackson County, Florida) on April 1, 1865. Of four brothers that left for war, only Samuel and his brother John Wyatt Basford returned home. His other two brothers, Lorenzo R. Basford and Martin A. Basford, never set foot on the Jackson County soil, again."
