HARRY J. MARKBY

CUMBERLAND, Md. -- Harry James Markby, 80, of 836 Bishop Walsh Dr., Cumberland, Md., died, Thursday, January 16, 2003, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland. Previously he had been a resident of Lions Manor Nursing Home.

Born August 23, 1922, in Ford Cliff, Pa., he was the son of the late Thomas A. and Catherine (Boyd) Markby. A sister, Elizabeth Ann Preslipski, and two brothers, Kenneth A. Markby and Chester A. Markby, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Markby was employed by Westvaco for 34 years before retiring in 1988. He joined the Personnel Department of Westvaco in 1951. At the time of his retirement he was working in the Corporate Personnel Office of Westvaco in New York City. Previously he spent six years in Kentucky as personnel manager at the newly built mill in Wickliffe. He was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and a veteran of three years service with the United States Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Adair Welton Markby, of Cumberland; a son, Dr. David Welton Markby, of San Francisco, Calif.; four brothers, Raymond E. Markby, of Kittanny, Pa., James B. Markby, of Leechburg, Pa., Sidney A. Markby, of Tucson, Ariz., and Walden C. Markby, of Centralia, Ill.

The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, Md., on Friday, January 17, from 7-9 p.m.. Hiram Lodge #103 AF & AM will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Grace Memorial Community Church, Bishop Walsh Road, Cumberland on Saturday, January 18, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Mickey Stephens officiating.

Friends will be received at the church one-hour prior to service.

Interment will be Philos Cemetery, Westernport.
