Samuel Gettle Sheaffer, son of Jacob Sheaffer and Margaret Gettle Shaffer, was born on May 13, 1841 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and died May 31, 1916 in Ness City, Ness County, Kansas. He was 75 years old. His occupation during his life were: Photo Studio in Hanover, York County, PA and Probate Judge in Ness County, Kansas and served as a Director of Many Companies.

On March 2, 1864, when Samuel Gettle was 22, he first married Leah S. Bower. They were divorced June 28, 1884 in Learned, Ness County, Kansas.

Children born to Samuel and Leah S Bower Sheaffer were:
* Nora M. - Born April 5, 1865.
* Richard F. - Born September 16, 1867. Richard F. died April 2, 1872. He was 4 years old and is buried in Hanover, York County, PA.
* Ada May (Maria) - Born on September 22, 1870.
* Bertha L. - Born July 22, 1873.


Samuel married a second time on June 27, 1887 when he was 46 years old to Nellie (unknown). They were divorced September 24, 1890 in Ness City, Ness County, Kansas.

On April 4, 1907 when Samuel Gettle was 65, he married a third time to Martha Rutt, in Scott City, Kansas. She is buried in McCracken, Rush County, Kansas.

In 1860, he was a laborer living in Latimore Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, although the 1863 draft registration list him living both in Franklin Township, where his parents resided, and in Hanover, both in neighboring York County.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Round Hill, Adams County, August 8, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 13 as a private with Co. I, 127th Pennsylvania, and rose to the rank of sergeant. Wounded at the battle of Fredericksburg December 13, 1862 (nature of wound as yet unknown), he nonetheless honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863. His brother Jacob Smith Sheaffer served in the same company and regiment, and his father Jacob Smith Sheaffer and brother William Otterbein Sheaffer served in other regiments.
