Margaret Ida Curran McKenzie, 79, passed away on October 9, 2016 at The Laurels in Salisbury, NC with her beloved husband Chuck McKenzie at her side.

She was born on March 5, 1937 in Port Huron, MI to the late Kathleen Millicent Black Curran and John O. Curran.

She is predeceased by her sister, Patricia Kathleen Curran, and step-grandson, Roy McKenzie.

Marge graduated from high school in Albuquerque, NM lettering in three sports. As a teenager, she traveled through Europe with her mother Kathleen, a court stenographer. She married Philip Edward Grote in Rapid City, SD in 1961. After settling in Winston-Salem, she and Philip divorced and she became an executive secretary with Bahnson Envirotech where she worked from 1973 to 1983. She continued her education and graduated from High Point College in 1988. She became a CPA and worked as an auditor for Sara Lee Corporation in Winston-Salem from 1983 to 1996. Later she worked as an accountant for Cross Creek Apparel in Mount Airy from 1996 to 1999. Marge married Charles Edwin McKenzie in 1989 and they lived in Kernersville while building their retirement home in Lowgap. They moved to Lowgap in 1995, residing in a picturesque log cabin overlooking the Fisher River. Marge and Chuck were members of Mount Airy Friends Meeting and later moved to Mount Airy, living at Ridgecrest from 2014 to 2016. The family especially thanks the dear friends and Ridgecrest neighbors as well as the staff of Live Long Well Care for helping to look after Marge the past few months.

Marge is survived by: her husband Chuck; children Sharon Sorensen, Bryan Grote and Donna Ollis (Kirk); stepchildren Terri McKenzie, Joel McKenzie (Gayle) and Barry McKenzie (Kim); grandchildren Alyssa Sullins (Patrick), Cory Teat, Jackson Ollis and Savannah Ollis; step-grandchildren Connie McKenzie, James McKenzie (Jennifer) and Erin Arnold (Mark); and step-great-grandchildren Liam McKenzie and Adrian Arnold.

Marge will be buried in the McKenzie cemetery in Grayson County, VA.

A memorial service will be held at Mount Airy Friends Meeting on Saturday, October 29 at noon, with a reception to immediately follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Yokefellow Co-Operative Ministry, 215 Jones School Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to another charity of your choice.
