James Milton Stewart was born on 24 Nov 1829 in Fayetteville, Onondaga County, New York to James Stewart and Sarah Wright. After the family moved to Hebron, McHenry County, Illinois, James married Mary Hamilton, the daughter of William Jesse Hamilton and Abigail E. Farrand, on 1 Sep 1853 in Hebron.

They both passed away in Hebron when their only son, William Jesse Stewart, was a child – James on 1 Apr 1858, and Mary on 9 June 1863. They were buried in the family cemetery, South Hebron Cemetery. Their son William was raised by his maternal grandparents. William later moved from Illinois to Texas and Kansas, where William married Dorcas Isabel Dixon and had six children.
