Chris was born May 30, 1930 in Yankton, SD to Flora and Harry Christensen. Chris graduated from Yankton High School in 1948 and attended Yankton College. In Yankton she also worked at Hangar's Photography Studio before moving to Sioux Falls to work at Chuck Point Reality and Sioux Falls College. She also participated in the Sioux Falls College Women's Board and Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers.
On October 9, 1954 she married Kenneth Carstensen in Sioux Falls, where they made their home for most of their lives. Chris was very active in church life at First Baptist Church where she served as President of the American Baptist Women for a time. She was also instrumental in bringing Bible Study Fellowship to Sioux Falls. In 1992, they moved their home to Sheldon, IA until Kenneth passed away in 1997. She relocated to Sioux Falls shortly thereafter.
Chris was especially talented in needlework, sewing for her children as well as for herself. She loved designing and stitching needlepoint projects and has left a legacy of her art for her grand children in their Christmas stockings.
Chris is survived her three children, Karen Sue Appleton of Sanborn, IA, Bruce Charles Carstensen of Sioux Falls, SD, and Meredith Kay DeCou of Hartford, SD; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two younger sisters, Anne Ault of Denver, CO and Judy Kay Rawhauser of Newcastle, WY.
Visitation will begin at 1:00pm at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Ave, Sioux Falls, SD, on Thursday, September 29, 2016. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm at First Baptist Church, 1401 S. Covell Ave, Sioux Falls, SD, on Friday, September 30, 2016. Interment will be at 11:30am at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD prior to the memorial service.
