Nita Carol Bidwell (1932 - 2016)
REW, Pa. - Nita Carol Bidwell, 84, of Rew, passed away Tuesday (Sept. 27, 2016) at her home following a lengthy illness, surrounded by her loving family as she took her two last sweet sighs.
Born on May 29, 1932, in Daybrook, W.Va., she was the younger of two daughters born to Corbly Sanford "Jube" and Rilla Ruth Tennant Ammons.
C.S. "Jube" Ammons awaited his family's move to Bradford on July 1, 1934. Due to the oil field boom, he and a few other uncles came earlier. Carol's memory of her father sitting on the front porch of the apartment building as they pulled up was extremely dear to her. Her father and an uncle soon set out to start a Church of Christ in Bradford. Her father was an elder in the church until his passing in 1976.
On Jan. 28, 1955, in the Church of Christ at 10 Derrick Road, Bradford, she married her loving husband of 61 years, Clifford Eugene "John" Bidwell Jr., who survives and took patient and tender care of her in her time of illness.
Carol graduated in 1950 from Otto High School in Duke Center, where she was involved in choir, band (playing the French horn), National Honor Society, school plays and Student Council. She also was an officer of her class. Upon graduation, she worked in the office of Daystroms Inc. in Olean, N.Y., for the next five years. Upon her fiance's return from the Korean War, they married and, soon after, started a family. While raising her family, she worked as a cafeteria cook at the Earl J. Hyatt Elementary School in Rew, from 1967 until its closing in 1980.
She was an active member of the Church of Christ in Bradford for many years, including being baptized Feb. 24, 1946, by J.D. Janney. As a young wife and mother, she would sit and quilt with the ladies of the church or at a quilting bee, making quilts for a cherished soul, a newborn infant or a family in need. She cooked many meals for the vacation Bible school programs, picnics and gatherings throughout the years. She took care in ordering flowers for those of the church that had been hospitalized and for funeral services. She also taught many Sunday school classes and Wednesday evening classes throughout her lifetime.
Carol loved to work crossword puzzles, play sudoku and watch "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy." She had a talent for sewing and made many clothes for her family. She was an avid genealogist for the Tennant, Moore, Ammons, Wilson, Mason and Bidwell lines, submitting much of her work to publications, furthering knowledge, history and facts within those lines. She never wanted anything for herself. Her line, "The old, gray mare ain't what she used to be," rings out in the fond memories and letters of her friends she would correspond with from high school until the spring of 2016, when her health condition worsened.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Clifford E. Bidwell Jr., are a son, Larry Alan Bidwell (wife, Nancy) of Wake Forest, N.C.; three daughters, Ginger Sue Bidwell of Rew, Amber Jean Price-Cline (husband, Mark) of Eldred and Penny Lou Cole (husband, Jack) of Angier, N.C.; 11 grandchildren, Matthew Bidwell, Alex Bidwell, Britt Price, Brittney Price, Breanna Price, Braxx Price-Edmondson, Tim Woodruff, Jason Woodruff, Susan Velcheck, Christy Guin and Chad Cole; two sisters-in-law, Caroline Bidwell of Port Allegany and Janet Yvonne Bidwell of Duke Center; two brothers-in-law, John Jones of California and Fred Fay Dean of Cuba, N.Y.; an aunt-in-law, Edna Mae Gigee of Wellsville, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Rita Monabelle Beal; four brothers-in-law, David Karnes Beal, Malcolm Eugene Bidwell, Harry Baker and Keith Alvin Bidwell; and three sisters-in-law, Pauline Virginia Dean, Delores Ann Jones and Joanne Elaine Baker.
Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park Cemetery in Mount Alton.
