Jack Robert Francis O'Neill, 58 of Feeding Hills, the legendary local sportscaster and radio personality, lost his valiant battle with cancer at Baystate Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, December 15, 2006. Jack leaves his beloved wife and best friend of 34 years Linda (Keith) O'Neill and his three loving children whom he adored, Bridget M. O'Neill, Erin L. O'Neill and Matthew B. O'Neill all of Feeding Hills. He is survived by his adoring mother, Eleanor (Manfredini) O'Neill of Hungry Hill, Springfield where he was born on June 28, 1948 and was predeceased by his father, John P. O'Neill. He leaves his aunt Peggy Stroshine, sister-in-law Patricia Spaulding and her husband Arthur and his brother-in-law Irwin Keith and his wife Evelyn and his nieces and nephews, John, Ian, and Jeremy Keith and Eric and Shauna Spaulding as well and a host of cousins and a very special young friend Michael Griffin. He graduated from Catherdral High School in 1966 and matriculated to Emerson College in Boston to pursue his dream of being a sports broadcaster. He sang locally with the Irish band known as the Irish Setters in such local clubs as the Keg Room. He started at local radio stations in Connecticut and at WHMP before beginning his television career in 1968 at Channel 40 which was then known as WHYN, now known as WGGB. He left there in 1981 to pursue a career in radio on WHYN with his own sports talk show. He owned an operated his own advertising firm, Western Media Group in the eighties as well. In the late eighties he became the director of the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau a position he held until he joined the staff at Springfield Technical Community College in the mid nineties. All the while continuing his career in radio broadcasting at WHYN, then WNNZ and later at WKIX and presently on WMAS up until about three weeks ago. He also carried on his job as Assistant Director of Development at S.T.C.C. until his hospital admission of last week. His was the most recognizable voice in Western Mass, whether on the radio or in commercials or announcing a game. He was the voice of UMASS sports announcing the football, basketball and hockey games including this season. He hosted a weekly golf talk show with Cindy Johnson called From "Tee to Green" on WMAS. He was the announcer for all the Peach Basket Festival games. He was a twenty year member of the Holyoke Parade Committee and was the announcer at each of the parade broadcasts as well as the Mass at St. Jerome's Church. He was the past president of the Holyoke Parade Committee in 1998 and was the recipient of Gallivan and Rohan awards as well. His civic and charitable work is too voluminous to list but included United Cerebral Palsy, The Make a Wish Foundation and he was currently on the board of the Ronald McDonald House. He was the master of ceremonies at numerous golf tournaments, sporting events, charitable events and most recently was the host with Kathy Tobin of the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Hope parish from where he will be buried. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 19, at 9:30 A.M. from Colonial Forastiere Funeral Home, 985 Main Street, Agawam with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00 A.M. in Our Lady of Hope Church, 577 Carew Street, Springfield, followed by burial in Springfield Street Cemetery in Feeding Hills. Calling hours will be Monday from 2:00P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family request that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute 44 Binney St. Boston MA 02115, The Ronald McDonald House 34 Chapin Terr.
