British Army General. He had a military career that stretched from 1818 until his death in 1872. During the Crimean War he served as a Brigadier General and commander of the Heavy Cavalry Brigade under Major General George Bingham, 3rd Earl of Lucan. He led the Heavy Brigade at the October 25, 1854 Battle of Balaclava, in a successful charge against Russian cavalry. This success inspired the subsequent disastrous charge of the Light Brigade under Major General James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan. Scarlett later was promoted to Lieutenant General, and commanded the British cavalry forces in the Crimea until the end of the war. He rose to the rank of full General, and died at his home in Burnley, Lancashire in December 1871.

He is also commemorated on a memorial in the Royal Garrison Church of All Saints, Aldershot, Rushmoor Borough, Hampshire, England.
