Lawrence's mother, Catherine, died in 1904 when Lawrence was 16 years old.
By the age of 21, Lawrence was working as a plasterer. His father, Patrick O'Brien, and uncle, Patrick Boyle, were also plasterers.
Lawrence (age 29) was inducted into the Army during the last year of World War I. He left for Camp Kearny in San Diego County, California on 28 June 1918. He departed the United States for France on 16 August 1918. Lawrence served as a mechanic with Company D, 115th Ammunition Train. He returned to the United States on 18 June 1919 and was discharged on 30 June 1919 at St. Louis, Missouri.
Lawrence never married. Along with their father (Patrick), Lawrence and his sister Della (Catherine Adele) raised their niece, Henrietta (O'Brien) MacDonald after her mother, Annie (Kooistra) O'Brien, died of a blood clot. (Annie died in 1918, sixteen days after the birth of Henrietta.) They lived together at the family home at 368 North 6th Street, San Jose, California. (Lawrence and Della lived at this home their entire lives.)
In addition to working as a plasterer, Lawrence also raised whippets for dog racing. He had kennels and runs in the back yard for the whippets.
On 12 February 1962, Lawrence (age 73) died in a local hospital after a short illness. On 15 February 1962, he was buried at Calvary Cemetery in San Jose.
