Murdered. She was the teenage daughter of a "well-to-do" farmer David Price** and David's wife Margaret Price of Clearfield county. Clara died on a Wednesday at the age of 16 years, 5 months and 11 days. She was murdered just outside of Karthaus on the east side of the Susquehanna River (Burnside Township), Pennsylvania, by Englishman, Alfred Andrews who was found guilty of shooting Clara and was sentenced to death by hanging (i.e. gallows). During the trial he tried to convince everyone that the blood on his shoes was chicken's blood, but experts were called to the stand and they testified that the blood found on his shoes was human and not animal. After he was found guilty of the murder he made a full confession and stated that he had wanted to have his way with the girl (i.e. "to ravish her") and when she fought him off and ran away he took his revolver out and shot her between the ribs. After the trial, he was placed in the Centre county jail to await his sentence. A newspaper article, from that time period, stated that he planned on selling tracts of his confession to raise money for his wife and child. From this and other records, it is known that he was married and he had at least one child. During his stay in jail, he became sick and the question came up as to whether he was trying to poison himself to avoid dying on the gallows. Clara had numerous sisters and at least one brother. A "cenotaph", which is a monument erected in honor of a person whose remains are elsewhere, was placed near the area where Clara was murdered. Mr. D.M. Hutchinson, who roamed the forests of the area and who died in 1997 at the age of 93, replaced the old murder-site cenotaph marker with a new one. Later, when his new marker disappeared, he replaced it with a permanent memorial monument. Mr. Hutchinson's cenotaph for Clara is often mistaken as her burial location but it is actually where she died. The memorial monument is located in Centre county along the north bound road leading into Karthaus. Note: The murder scene is near the border of Centre and Clearfield counties.
Cemetery Headstone Monument at Keewaydin Cemetery has her name, birth date, death date, and age on the front. Along the side it states that she was murdered near Karthaus by Alfred Andrews. On the back, it states: "My Life for My Honor. On the fourth side, it reads: "Virtue hath its reward in life, as well as after death."
