Theodore B. "Ted" Hazelbaker died Monday, Dec. 18, 2006, due to complications of multiple myeloma.

Ted was born June 22, 1930, in Dillon, to Frank A. and Lois Brantly Hazelbaker. He attended Beaverhead County High School, Western Montana College, and the University of Montana in Missoula.

On Aug. 4, 1948, Ted married Clara Nelson and they enjoyed 58 years of marriage. Ted and Clara had three children, Terry, Lee, and Todd.

Ted was active in civic and community affairs as well as many charities. After trying a variety of jobs, Ted settled into the Southern Montana Abstract and Title Co., which he headed for more than 50 years.

During those 50 years he was very active in community, county, and state organizations. Ted was a member of First Presbyterian Church. After being selected as a delegate to the first Montana Boys State, he later became the longest serving director of that organization. A charter member of the Dillon Jaycees, he provided leadership while serving as local and state presidents as well as national director of the Montana Jaycees. He was recognized "Mr. Jaycee" because of his ongoing commitment to the improvement of Dillon. A past president of the Dillon Rotary Club and a 54-year member of the Elks Club, he also served as president of Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce and as a member of Dillon City Council. Ted served on the Barrett Hospital Board and was instrumental in fundraising for the new hospital.

Always appreciating the value of education, Ted was a member of BCHS Board of Trustees, District 10 board and worked on several projects to help sustain Western Montana College. Because of this dedication to education, he was appointed to the State Board of Education, where he served two terms as chairman.

Ted was a well-rounded man, a fan of competitive sports, righteous living, and faith in God and country, with service to all.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Frank W. Hazelbaker.

He is survived by his wife, Clara; sister, Lois Rogers of Phoenix; sisters-in-law, Agnes Hazelbaker and Virginia Nelson; daughter, Terry Mattfeldt of Colstrip; sons, Lee (Judy) of Belgrade and Todd (Nicole) of Dillon; grandchildren, Jay Mattfeldt (Juli), Chato Hazelbaker (Shari), Chadron Hazelbaker (Staci), Devin Dalton, and Charli Hazelbaker; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
