James Edward Schlagenhauf, 81, of Sugarcreek, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2016 at Oak Pointe Care Center in Baltic following a period of declining health. He was born July 11, 1935, in Shanesville, to the late Carl Schlagenhauf and Lucy Everhart Schlagenhauf Rice. He was retired from the Norfolk and Southern Railroad in Brewster, was a volunteer at the Ohio Central Railroad in Sugarcreek and was a member of the Sugarcreek Church of the Brethren. He was married Jan. 14, 1955, to the former Coleen Faye Miller and she died April 24, 2016.
He is survived by his sister, Mary (Myron "Mike") Miller of Sugarcreek; and his sister-in-law, Mardella Rice of Baltic. In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his step father, Byron Rice; his brother, John Rice; his sister, Marjorie (Gene) Schlarb.
Services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Dick Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Cemetery in Baltic. Friends may call on Monday 6-8 p.m., at Smith-Varns Funeral Home, 115 Andres Drive in Sugarcreek. Memorials may be made to Bella Care Hospice, 4680 Douglas Circle, Canton, Ohio 44718.
