ROBERT HILTON

Robert Hilton, son of James (Jacobus) Hilton and his first wife Judith Marten, was baptized at Albany, New York, November 5, 1749, and died on his farm in the town of Bethlehem, Albany County, N.Y., June 9, 1829.

When he became of age he leased a farm of 260 acres of the Van Rensselears, located in what is now a part of New Scotland. This property is still owned (1936) by his direct descendants. He was a man of prominence and influence in the town, and was a member of the Episcopal Church.
He married in New Scotland, Albany County, N.Y., Elizabeth Burgess or Bortjes. She was born in 1754 and died January 8, 1822, in New Scotland.

Before the Revolution, Robert Hilton served as a fifer in the company of Captain Abraham Cuyler of the first Battalion of Albany militia as shown by a Return of said Company dated May 1, 1767. Richard Hilton, his uncle, was Seargent of the same company. (Annual Report of the State Historian, 1897, Colonial Series, Vol. 2, page 800) The Return Roll of this Company was made at Albany.

During the Revolutionary War he had the following service:- He was a Private in the First Regiment of Albany Militia in the State of New York, commanded by Captain John Scott - (Land Bounty Rights) as shown by a list of men in said regiment in "New York in the Revolution", page 221, where his name appears as - Robert Hilten.

Children, all born in New Scotland (Bethlehem) Albany County, New York:
(1) Maria Hilton, b. Sept. 7, 1775; m. 1st, William Tucker; m. 2nd, C. McKelsey.
(2) Sara Hilton, b. Nov. 20, 1777.
(3) JAMES HILTON, b. Jan. 5, 1780; d. Nov. 11, 1845; m. Mary Dennison of New Scotland, N.Y.
(4) JOHN BURGESS HILTON, b. May 1, 1783; removed to Welland County, Canada West, (Ontario). Died there Sept. 1, 1832. m. Hannah, daughter of Andrew and Jane (Davis) Ostrander, formerly of Albany, N.Y., b. Dec. 6, 1789 at Stamford, Welland County, Canada West, (Ontario).
(5) Julia Hilton, b. in 1792; m. Silas Crawford.
(6) Robert Hilton, b. ?
(7) Jeannette Hilton, b. ? m. Robert Ackenburg.
(8) William Hilton, b. ?
(9) Anna Hilton, b. in 1798; m. Robert Randall.

His last Will and Testament, Recorded June 25th 1829

In the Name of God Amen. I Robert Hilton of the Town of Bethlehem County of Albany and state of New York being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind & memory Blessed be Almighty God for the same do make and publish this my last Will and testament in manner and form following viz. first I give and bequeath to my oldest son James Hilton five hundred Dollars alrardy [[sic]] to him in Land being fifty Acres 2nd I give and devise to my son William R. Hilton his heirs and assigns twenty Eight and one third Acres of Land laying along the fifteen Acres conveyed to him by deed under my hand dattid [[sic]] the 27th day of April 1820. 3rd I give and devise to my son Robert Hilton Jr. twenty three and one third Acres of Land and to his heirs and assigns laying along his lot of Land conveyed by me to him bearing date the 27th day of April 1820. And the remainder of my Estate being fourty [[sic]] three and one third Acres of Land I give and devise to my son John B Hilton his heirs and assigns laying between the lots of William and Robert my sons I also give and bequeath to my daughter Mary Tucker one Hundred Dollars and to my daughter Sarah Swan I give and bequeath one hundred Dollars and to my daughter Judith Crawford I give and bequeath one hundred Dollars and to my daughter Jannet Alkenbaugh I give and bequeath one hundred Dollars and to my daughter Ann Randell I give and bequeath one hundred Dollars to be paid by my three sons William Robert & John three years after my decease. The Buildings on my Estate at this time are to be apprised after my decease and the son on whose land they stand shall pay the sum apprised to my five daughters as part of thiere [[sic]] sums of one hundred Dollars each as mentioned within or on the other side and the remainder to be paid in equal proportions by my three sons viz William R Hilton Robert Hilton Jr. & John B Hilton. And lastly I appoint my son James Hilton to be the Executor of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 25th day of June 1824.
