Briggs, Albert A. Also known as "The Colonel" made his transition into eternity on Wednesday, November 2, 2011.
He was 95 years old.
Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi he had been a long time resident of Chicago. He was a graduate of DuSable High School, and a member of the Wendell Phillips Hall of Fame.
Mr. Briggs had long and distinguished careers in the U.S. Army and Chicago Public Schools. On active duty he was an Artillery Captain and served in the Army Reserve at the Pentagon in Washington D.C until retiring as a Colonel.
At Chicago Public Schools he served in many positions including Superintendent of District nine. He retired as Assistant Superintendent of the Department of Pupil Personnel and Special Education Program Development.
Through his lifetime of service to his country, dedication to educating children and leadership, he had written many articles and received numerous awards.
Al Briggs is survived by his wife of 73 years of marriage, Elsie Lightfoot Briggs, his two daughters, Beth E. Briggs and Cheryl (Wadiya) Arkorful. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Tirshatha Derricks-Bey, Kweku Arkorful, Nana Arkorful, Paa Kofi Arkorful and the special love of his life Kareem Armstead, great grandson.
