In the excitement of having a girl, her father wrote down Joan instead of Johanna after his mother, the intended name. It went on the birth certificate as Joan but they always pronounced it JoAnn.

Joan (Johnson) Baker, 74, of Higgins Street, a retired school teacher, died Saturday at Miriam Hospital, Providence.

She was the former wife of the late Ellsworth Leroy Baker, Jr. Born in Boston, a daughter of the late Andrew Ture and Madeline Gertrude "Mida" (Christiansen) Johnson, she had lived in Smithfield for 13 years, previously living in West Islip, New York.

Mrs. Baker taught in elementary schools in the West Babylon, NY and Putnam, CT school systems for 30 years, retiring in 1986.

She was a graduate of Pembroke College, class of 1949, and a member of the Pembroke Club, Brown Alumni Association.

She was a docent at the John Nicholas Brown House, Providence, served on the board of Homestead Mill, Smithfield, and was a member of the Women's Health Initiative, Miriam Hospital and Hamilton House, Providence.

She leaves two sons, Richard Ellsworth Baker of Bel Air, Maryland and Andrew Sherman Baker of Providence; a daughter Christina B. McKenrick of Seekonk; two brothers, David Lincoln Johnson of Johnston and Andrew Ture Johnson of Palm Springs, California; and five grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Arthur Young Baker.

A memorial services will be held tomorrow at noon in Newman Congregational Church, Newman and Pawtucket Avenues, East Providence. Burial will be private.
