On Sunday, Nov. 5, 1893, he married Mary Elizabeth Smith at the home of her parents in Carroll County with Elder Enoch Phillips performing the ceremony. This couple was blessed with eleven children, including two sets of twins, before Mary died from complications of measles in 1914.
On Nov. 10, 1918, in Carroll County, he married the widow Ida Ann Victory Skinner Smith who helped him care for his children, and throughout the Depression years they also lovingly provided a home for three of his grandchildren.
His primary occupation was farming, but he was known for teaching Sacred Harp singing schools throughout the area, writing Sacred Harp music, making baskets from white oak splits, and doing carpentry work.
He died on Dec. 11, 1948, at the home of his granddaughter and was buried at Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist Church near Bowdon, GA.
