Geary Allen Bruce, age 94, of Raleigh, North Carolina, departed this life on October 13, 2016. He was a retired US Navy Chief Petty Officer and proud yet humble World War II veteran. He was born July 21, 1922 at home on the family farm five miles south Ft. Lupton, Colorado; the 8th of 9 children and the last surviving child of the late George C. Bruce and Nettie A. Stover.

He graduated in May of 1940 from Grand Junction High School, Grand Junction, CO, where he met his sweetheart, Alice Marie Porter. Despite his enlistment in the United State Navy in October 1940, their bond and love grew stronger throughout their post graduation courtship. Prior to their marriage, Geary's military assignment was to the Naval Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Lexington, a CV-2 class vessel. He served in the Pacific Theater in World War II aboard the "LEX" as a communications specialist. He survived the sinking of the "LEX" by enemy forces in the Battle of the Coral Sea on May 8, 1942. With the exception of Geary's tours of duty at sea while serving in the U.S. Navy, he and his wife were inseparable. Their devotion to each other was apparent to anyone - friend and stranger alike. Their courtship culminated in their marriage on May 25, 1943 in an Episcopal ceremony in Ling Beach, California.

Geary served in the defense of his country proudly for 21 years retiring from military service in 1961. After his retirement from the Navy, he worked another 21 years in the public sector for the Social Security Administration (SSA) ending his career in October 1961 as manager of Englewood Social Security office thus culminating 42 years of dedicated military and civilian service to his country.

Geary was predeceased by his living wife and partner of 71 years, Alice Marie. He is survived by their three devoted children: Patricia Marie Chernow, of Goodyear, AZ; Geary A. Bruce, of Manassas, VA; and Marcia Anne Modica, of Raleigh, NC. He was the grandfather to six grandchildren and great-grandfather of eleven.

Family will receive friends on Sunday, October 16, 2016 at 9:30 am at the Mausoleum Chapel of Raleigh Memorial Park (7501 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh); with services to begin at 10 am. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy, with interment to follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made in Geary's memory to the American Heart Association .
