Jerrold D. Bergene

Jerrold D. Bergene, 58, of 224 Century Road, Manitowoc, died unexpectedly Thursday evening, March 11, 2010, at his work.

He was born on June 13, 1951, in Manitowoc, son of the late Albert and Eleanor (Vraney) Bergene. Jerry attended Shadyside Elementary School and was a 1969 graduate of Valders High School. On Sept. 10, 1977, he married the former Mary Schneider at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Kiel.

For the past 40 years, Jerry was a faithful and hard-working employee of Brillion Iron Works. He was a member of St. Peter's UCC in Kiel. Jerry was also a dedicated volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul store in Kiel for many years, where he truly loved and enjoyed the people he volunteered with and looked forward to his time with them every Tuesday. Jerry was a true handyman. He loved being outside or in his workshop. His knowledge of building and woodworking helped him to fix any problem that came his way. His friends and family often called on him for advice or to help them with their many projects. He looked forward to retiring very soon.

Jerry will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Mary. He was the proud father of three daughters: Nicole (Dan) Garvey of Wrightstown, Sara Bergene of Canton, Mich., and fiance Yakup Bayram, and Maria Bergene of Aurora, Ill. He had two grandsons whom he deeply adored and of whom he would show endless pictures: Owen and Charlie Garvey. He is further survived by his brothers and sisters: Carol Pagels of Two Creeks, Keith (Darlene) Bergene and Ronald (Marcia) Bergene, both of Manitowoc, Linda (Richard) Menza of Reedsville, Sharon (Larry) Satori, Connie (Ron) Hedler, Randy Bergene and Michael Bergene, all of Manitowoc, and Janelle (Donald) Schisel of Cato. Jerry is also survived by his mother-in-law: Marian Schneider of Collins; sisters-in-law: Lisa (Larry) Buvid of Kiel and Susan (Michael) Snell of Manitowoc. Many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends also survive him. Jerry will be sadly missed by all who loved and knew him. We can only hope he knew how much his family and friends deeply loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister: Shirley Bergene; a nephew: Scott Bergene; and his father-in-law: Gilbert Schneider.

Funeral services for Jerry will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at St. Peter's UCC, 424 Fremont St., Kiel, with the Rev. Judine Duerwaechter and the Rev. Kim Henning officiating. Friends may call at the Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, 815 Sixth St., Kiel, on Monday from 4 until 8 p.m. and at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. A memorial has been established in his name for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
