John Arthur Holmes, 87, of Hilo died February 11, 2016 at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home.

Born in Clinton, Iowa, October 29, 1928 to Robert Wesley Holmes Sr. and Ruth Foster (Morehouse) Holmes. He grew up in Clinton, Iowa and also lived in Davenport and Boone, Iowa before moving permanently to his adopted home of Hilo, HI. He worked for Alcoa Aluminum for 19 years in Davenport, Iowa.

He was the owner of Holmes' Sweet Home Bed and Breakfast, a self-employed general contractor, U.S. Army Korean War veteran, and deacon for Church of the Holy Apostles.

He was first married to Rosemary Patricia Triplett, October 1950, in Des Moines, Iowa. John and Rosemary share five children. Stephen, Anne, Kathleen, Daniel and Julia. That marriage ended in divorce May, 1987, in Hilo, HI. She died in 2008.

John married Charlotte Mangelsdorf on April 8, 1989, at The Church of the Apostles, Hilo, Hawaii.

He is survived by his wife; Charlotte; two sons; Stephen (Carol) of Kona, HI, Daniel (Tawanna) of Colorado Springs; two daughters; Kathleen Grogg and Julie (Scott) Hahn of Colorado Springs, CO; three step-daughters; one sister; Edith Morono (Ronald) Knee; of eight grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; one great-great-great grandchild; cousins; nieces and nephews.

John was proceeded in death by his parents, his daughter Anne (David) Frahm and siblings Robert W. Holmes Jr. of Hayden, AL and Henry Holmes of Camanche, IA.

Service with Holy Communion 4:30 p.m. Saturday (February 20) Church of the Holy Apostles. No flowers. Memorial donations to Church of the Holy Apostles 1407 Kapiolani St., Hilo, HI 96720, or Hospice of Hilo, 1011 Waianuenue, Hilo, HI 96720.

John was cremated. His remains are buried in the Hilo, HI veterans cemetery.
