Services will be held for Mrs. Shizuko (Ono) Hudson, age 85, a 44-year resident of Concord, CA on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Oakmont Memorial Park, Lafayette, California. Mrs. Hudson passed away of cancer-related illness on Monday, October 24, 2016 with her family at her bedside at John Muir Medical Center in Concord

Shizuko was the daughter of Shinzo and Tsuna (Takahashi) Ono. She was born December 17, 1930 in Osaka, Japan and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 23 with her husband James T. Hudson, a career Navy man. As a Navy wife she traveled wherever the service took them. Her husband preceded her in death August 15, 1980.

Shizuko worked for close to 30 years as a Nurse's Aide for several convalescent homes and hospitals in Oakland, her last employer being the MPI Center at Peralta Hospital. After she retired in 1995 she remained close friends with many of her past coworkers, traveling with them to the casinos on a regular basis, her favorite being the regular excursions to Reno. Shizuko was known as "Suzy" by her many friends, including those she visited with weekly to play bingo at the local senior centers. There weren't too many things that would get in the way of her playing bingo and sharing special homemade treats with her friends. She was always smiling. And she loved to make others smile. She also loved to travel, making almost annual trips to visit her family in Japan, to vacation with her sons and grandchildren in Hawaii, and the occasional trip to see family in Mississippi or friends around the country.

She is survived by her three sons, their spouses: Jim & Carol, Ed & Anna, and Frank; four loving grandchildren – Kelly, Caitlin, Jennifer and Sean. She is also survived by her family in Japan: brothers Nobuo and Kazuo, sisters Tomeko, Mitsuko, Kumiko, Noriko, and Yukiko, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by brother-in-law Edward Hudson and nieces and nephews in Mississippi.

Shizuko had been diagnosed with cancer 3 months earlier and chose in her strong and fiercely independent way to forego treatment and enjoy the rest of her life doing the things she loved to do with family and friends. And that's exactly what she did, including a trip to the Big Island of Hawaii with son Jim in late September.

"Our Mother was unquestionably the center and strength of our family. She is and will be forever loved and missed."
