Born Theodore A. Bucher, one of eight children of Theodore J. and Catherine (Gamma) Bucher of Oakland, California, Rev. Father Mark Bucher, O.F.M., entered the Order of Friars Minor at St. Anthony's Seminary in Santa Barbara, along with his brother George, the future Fr. Victor Bucher. They were both ordained to the priesthood in 1925, and said their first Mass at their home parish, St. Elizabeth's in Oakland. Another Bucher brother, Francis, also became a Franciscan priest, known in religion as Father Marcian. After ordination, Father Mark taught at St. Anthony's Seminary, and then went to serve the Tohono O'odham Native Americans on the Papago Reservation with his brother, Fr. Marcian, at the Mission San Xavier del Bac in Tucson, and at St. John's Mission in Komatke, Arizona. During the 1940's, he served at Immaculate Conception parish in San Diego, California, and then returned to Santa Barbara, where he died at age 51.
