Final services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday from the Coultrip Funeral Home, only for the family, and at 2 p.m. from the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church for John L. Johnson, 63, honored longtime resident of Sycamore, who died Thursday night at the local hospital, following a heart attack, which he suffered late that afternoon, while shoveling snow. Pastor Eric N. Hawkins officiated and burial was in the Elmwood cemetery.
The high esteem in which he was held, was evidenced by the many lovely floral contributions.
John L. Johnson was born May 28, 1876, in Bleking, Sweden, the son of John and Anna Johnson, coming to the United States at the age of 16 years. The family settled in the Esmond community. On December 19, 1901, he was married to Hilda Loft, whose death occurred July 1, 1958. They farmed in the Mayfield and Malta communities until retiring in 1939, and moving to Sycamore, where the home has since been made.
After his retirement, he greatly enjoyed working in his yard and garden. He was always very devoted to his home and family. For many years he was a faithful member of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Archie (Eleanor) Gould of Five Points, who is a DeKalb County Probation Officer, and Miss Jeanette Johnson, at home; and one son, Roy of Pittsfield; also five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two sons and a daughter.
