Floyd G. Messmer, age 81, of Thomson, Illinois, died Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at his home. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 15, 2006 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mount Carroll, Illinois, a one hour visitation will be held prior to the service at the church. Reverend David Vidler will officiate. Burial will be in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Illinois. Visitation will be held 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 14, 2006 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. A memorial fund has been established in Floyd's memory. Floyd was born on April 20, 1925 in Woodland Twp., Carroll County, Illinois, the son of Roy Raymond and Lillie Dorthea Barbara (Rath) Messmer. He married Joann I. Rockwell on September 13, 1952 in the Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa.
Floyd served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II and also during the Korean War. Floyd was a longtime member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mount Carroll and was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post # 2223 in Savanna, Illinois. He was a Yard Master for Santa Fe and the Illinois Central Railroads in the Chicago Produce Terminal for over 35 years. He was a "Jack of all trades", who enjoyed plumbing, auto body, car mechanics and carpentry. Floyd loved to spend time with his family and friends, he was a kind and generous man who was always willing to help others.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Carl Messmer.
