Mary Amelia Murrow Pate Downs was born November 10, 1823 in Effingham County, Georgia the daughter of Rev. John William Murrow and Mary Amelia Louisa Badger Murrow. She had six siblings. With her first husband Joseph Samuel Pate, Sr. (who is probably buried in Tyler County, Texas near his second wife), whom she married on June 7, 1838 in Twiggs County, Georgia, she had two children: Edna Josephine Pate Downs and William James Pate. With her second husband Isaiah Benjamin Downs, whom she married in 1848, she had ten children: Eugenia Astoria Downs Gill, Emma E. Downs Thompson, Sarah Catherine Elizabeth Downs, Lawson Bascon Downs, Rev. John Barrett Downs, Mary Amantha Downs Bradley, Anna Caroline Downs Bradley, Albert Walker Smith Downs, Aloyd Downs, and Elizabeth Downs. She died at age 51 on March 19, 1875 in Bryan County, Georgia and is probably buried in an unmarked grave at Liberty Chapel Cemetery in Bryan County. Her daughter from her first marriage married her second husband's younger brother, Emmett Thomas Downs. Mary's ancestry was Irish. I hope one of her descendants will add her photo to this site.

Mary was the great-great-granddaughter of the famous 18th-century portrait artist Joseph Badger.
